Say hello to some “cheap” graphics cards!
Buying a good graphics card in the past few years has not been a short journey, filled with high prices, limited supplies, and lack of electricity to begin with. However, this did not stop AMD, Nvidia, and now Intel from introducing new products, and today we will be looking at the new AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT and Radeon RX 7800 XT. These two GPUs are likely to be based on the RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4070 graphics cards, which is why they are called SKUs.

We’ve seen what the impressive Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 can do for over $1,500. The low end of the GPU market has been full of ideas for previous cards, which should change with the recently released Nvidia GPUs and these two new cards from AMD. If you’re looking for powerful GPUs to enjoy all your favorite PC games at 1080p and 1440p, the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT are two great graphics cards and well worth buying.
In this review, we’ll be looking at the strengths of these graphics cards, how they handle different PC games, and why we believe you should buy one. AMD provided XDA Developers with samples of both the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT, but they had nothing to contribute to this review.

The AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT is an affordable graphics card that focuses on scoring high scores at 1080p and good performance at 1440p. It can also handle some 4K games, if you’re willing to download a few updates and enable AMD’s FSR technology.

Prices and availability
Both AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT and Radeon RX 7800 XT were launched on September 6, 2023. Prices come in at $449 for the RX 7700 XT and $499 for the RX 7800 XT. There are no AMD versions of the latter GPU, meaning you’ll have to rely on AIB pricing for the fastest cards. To help attract players, a free copy of Starfield is available with both cards. This is very cheap compared to the more powerful AMD and Nvidia. The RTX 4090 is almost three times more expensive, putting the GPU market with its own pricing challenges.

Powerful writing at great prices
AMD designed two graphics cards with 1440p (2K) gaming in mind. As such, they both fit into the RX 70 lineup by slotting in below the RX 7900 XT. The RX 7600 is the current entry-level GPU from Team Red. Sporting the latest from AMD With its RDNA 3 architecture, the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT offer more advantages than their predecessors, according to AMD’s press release. As well as boosting performance through hardware, AMD has been working hard on its FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) and HYPR-RX technologies.
There is also full support for the latest refresh displays with DisplayPort 2.1, advanced ray tracing support, AI accelerators, and AV1 encoding. The RT cores are second and the AI accelerators are new to the RX 70 series. The 12GB and 16GB RAM allocations on the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT should be enough for 1440p gaming for years to come, though we suspect this will cause problems for those who test take advantage of the UHD options. We reviewed the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT and found the RDNA 3 to offer a significant advantage over the previous cards.
Compared to previous generation GPUs from AMD, the second generation of AMD Infinity Cache has allowed the company to effectively manage half of the available cache while improving bandwidth. The RX 7700 XT comes with 48 MB (as opposed to 96 MB on the RX 6700 XT) yet has an 18 Gb/s, 192-bit memory system for a bandwidth of up to 1,995.3 GB/s. The RX 6700 XT only managed 1,278 GB/s. The RX 7800 XT is the same story with 64 MB (against 128 MB on the RX 6800) and comes with a 19.5 Gb / s, 256-bit memory system up to 2,708.4 GB / s of bandwidth.
In order to achieve all this and achieve higher results, AMD increased the total power of the RX 7700 XT to 245W from 230W with the RX 6700 XT. The RX 7800 XT hits 263W from 250W with the RX 6800. The two new GPUs of the RX 70 are recommended for use with power supplies that can use 700W of the total. All in all, AMD effectively doubled the performance of both cards over their predecessors with the RX 7700 XT achieving 35 TFLOPS and the RX 7800 XT 37 TFLOPS.

We received the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and XFX Radeon RX 7700 XT Speedster 219 Quick edition for review. Interestingly, the main GPU in our model is the RX 7700 XT with an over-engineered cooling system. The screen is large, similar to the more expensive and powerful cards. The RX 7800 XT follows AMD’s usual practice when it comes to design and is very minimal in terms of features, and there is essentially zero RGB lighting. The same goes for XFX’s RX 7700 XT, although it has a lot more going on in the overall design.
Cooling isn’t an issue for any card. Both GPUs are powered by the latest RDNA 3 architecture with the Navi 32 processor. Power is provided using two 8-pin connectors. Everything is controlled using AMD’s best software, which allows one to monitor power consumption and temperature, as well as improve game optimization and even overclocking. If you are also using an AMD processor, various controls will be opened here on the chip.
Procedure
You won’t be disappointed with 1440p gaming
According to AMD, the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT perform (almost) better than the RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4070, respectively. This is until ray tracing is turned on, which limits what AMD is doing with the latest GPUs. Nvidia’s ray tuning is just fine for heavy work, especially at higher resolutions. We encountered a similar issue in our extensive testing and found the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT to be the best for gaming at 1440p. 4K is also possible with FSR supported and other visual improvements are planned.

2K and 4K performance on the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT is solid. They blow previous generation cards out of the water and even better than what Nvidia offers with the RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4070, beating the Team Green GPUs in some cases. Things get a little worse when we focus on ray tracing. Enabling FSR helps AMD recover the lost frames due to the additional problems on RNDA 3 GPUs, but even Nvidia’s DLSS technology is better and increases the difference in many cases.

Nvidia is still the leader in the field when it comes to ray tracing. The RTX 40 series cards didn’t have great launches, but there’s no denying how powerful these GPUs are. AMD still has a ways to go to Team Green with high-end graphics. We are fans of what RDNA 3 has brought to the table and while the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT are two graphics cards, there is a lot of competition in this market segment with Nvidia and Intel.
AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT and 7800 XT: Should you buy?
While it’s expected that many will pay far more than that for graphics cards, prices have returned to normal, although some would argue that the MSRPs were inflated to begin with. The RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT are solid and well priced to take on the competition from Nvidia. The RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4070 are both great GPUs in their own right and leave AMD in the dust when ray tracing is enabled, but one cannot ignore the value offered by AMD here.
If you’re going to have a 2K monitor for the future or you’re going to do some 4K gaming here and there, the GPU might work better. The RX 7800 XT is the most powerful card and has an extra 4GB of VRAM, which makes a big difference when handling high-quality images, which are available with 4K. Nvidia is still the king of ray tracing, although AMD has made some strides across the board compared to its previous implementations of the technology.
If we had to recommend the best GPU for gaming, it would be the RX 7800 XT, because it’s always better to spend a little more money to get the best performance your budget will allow. The RX 7800 XT is the card to buy if you want to do 4K gaming at some point, while the RX 7700 XT is the GPU for you if you stick with the 1440p available.
