AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT vs. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080: Which GPU is for you?

What is the king?

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 and AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT have similar features and performance but are priced at different price points. The former costs $ 1,200, and the latter $ 900 (although, in fact, all GPUs can be found for less). You can also play games comfortably at 4K and ray tracing is supported on both cards. This guide will show you how to choose between the 7900 XT and the 4080.

XDA’S VIDEO OF THE NEXT DAY CONTENTS

Nvidia’s RTX 4080 is the company’s second flagship, which sits below the unaffordable $1,600 RTX 4090. It packs enough punch to handle ray tracing games at 1440p and 4K and is going head to head with the new RX 7900 series from AMD. Compared to the Radeon RX 7900 XT, there is a clear winner, depending on how you value money.

If money is not an issue, the RTX 4080 is the most powerful GPU, but if you want to get more for your money, the 7900 XT is the better value. Both of these GPUs are very expensive compared to what we used to pay for similar models; However, Nvidia’s prices are foreign, and AMD is undercutting the competition significantly. However, there is more to it than just price and performance.

Price, availability, and specifications

Since the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT was launched in December 2022, its availability has been very good, and the price has dropped to $800 for several models. While the official MSRP continues to be $900, the 7900 XT is now $800, and it’s not going away anytime soon. Nvidia’s Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 is no exception, as it’s not quite as expensive, and several models are closer to $1,100 than the $1,200 MSRP. However, the 4080 is often still sold at MSRP, and you don’t have much choice between the cheaper models.

Construction

Looking at the details, it is not clear which card is better. The AMD card has more VRAM with higher bandwidth, but the RTX 4080 has almost twice as many graphics computing cores (although this is very different from AMD’s). The same goes for the architecture, with the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT based on RDNA 3 and the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 using Ada Lovelace. In the end, the spec sheet doesn’t tell you much about performance between two completely different GPUs.

They all support ray tracing to some extent; however, Nvidia’s implementation has had plenty of time to mature and make better use of AI-assisted calculations. Combined with DLSS, you can enjoy smooth gaming with these heavy-duty features enabled. AMD has similar technologies to Nvidia, but the company is playing, which shows the test results below. Its ray tracing capabilities are not cutting edge compared to Nvidia, and while FSR is good, it’s not as good as DLSS (although it will probably be in many other games soon).

When it comes to drivers, Nvidia’s are usually reasonable at launch, while AMD’s may take longer to mature but can improve the performance of the card, although you can look at this as if AMD is improving its product rather than making it better. These two cards will be trading off each other throughout the day, so let’s see how the game plays out.

Procedure

The two GPUs are almost identical in performance, although the RTX 4080 comes out on top almost across the board by a small margin. If you can’t afford the $1,000 AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX, the Radeon RX 7900 XT offers better value than the RTX 4080 when looking at performance per dollar.

Overall, the RTX 4080 is the faster gaming card compared to the RX 7900 XT, especially when it comes to ray tracing. Although the cores of the 7900 XT seem to be much faster individually than those on the 4080, the 4080 has so many cores that the 7900 XT cannot keep up.

You’ll be paying 30% more for the RTX 4080 than the RX 7900, but the overall performance isn’t the same, with some games seeing almost no increase (Loud Crying 6) and others are seeing a big jump, especially at 4K. Ray’s research, as expected, is a different story. Nvidia’s GPUs run well across the board, making it a safe bet if you want to turn ray tracing on.

For the price, the RX 7900 XT is by far the best. However, if you’re spending $800 or more on a GPU, you probably don’t care about price. But if you still care about your money at this price point, you’ll appreciate the new 7900 XT’s price tag at $800 since, at launch, the 7900 XTX cost only $100 and performed very well. Now, the 7900 XT is very interesting even if it doesn’t beat the 4080 in games.

Which GPU is the best?

The RTX 4080 is a solid GPU and the best ray-tracing graphics card in this comparison, but it is very expensive. With AMD able to start the RX 7900 series from $900 (and dropping to $800), it’s clear how much Nvidia is charging for extras and ray tracing. Despite this, the 4080 hasn’t come down in price, with a few models hitting the $1,100 mark.

Then there’s the RX 7900 XTX, which is around $1,000 and beats the 4080 in every aspect except performance and looks. If you want a faster 7900 XT for $150 to $200 more, then the 7900 XTX is for you. While the 4080 is a great GPU, it’s clearly too expensive to be worth it.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Founders Edition Performance and features

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 is the better GPU for gaming at 1440p and 4K, especially with ray tracing. But it is very expensive and not the best graphics card right now.

Although the 7900 XT pales in comparison to the 4080 when it comes to upscaling and ray tracing, these are still not available in all PC games, and you may be able to ignore their presence depending on the games you play. In that case, the 7900 XT is a cheap 4080 with a lot of VRAM, and it’s worth it even in games where it’s limited.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT Best bang for buck

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT may be a weaker GPU compared to the RTX 4080, but it offers the best value and is very affordable.
