Google Bard is the company’s answer to artificial intelligence, but how does it work and what can you do with it?
Bard is Google’s answer to artificial intelligence, packed with the ability to brainstorm, code, and solve logical problems. Bard’s biggest advantage over the likes of ChatGPT’s competitors is that it can use the Internet, although it’s messed up on some of the competition in a few crazy ways.
How does Google Bard work?
Google Bard is in an odd position when it comes to the technology behind it, as Google hasn’t been very specific about the language it installs. Google announced at this year’s I/O that Google Bard will use the PaLM 2 language for speech production, but asking Bard what it uses gives the answer that it uses LaMDA for conversations and PaLM for speech production. There is no mention of PaLM 2 whatsoever.
Having said that, AI is not very reliable when it comes to making accurate claims. So, we’ll assume that because Google said Bard uses PaLM 2, it uses PaLM 2. Palm stands for Pathways Language Model, and this is the second iteration.
Google Bard has an advantage over competitors such as ChatGPT because it can access the web, meaning you can feed it a link and ask it to summarize the site for you or ask for help.
The most interesting thing about PaLM 2 is that the largest version of PaLM 2, PaLM 2-L, is much smaller than the main version of PaLM but it works well, and the only problem is that the smaller model requires more training. PaLM 2 models were found to outperform their predecessors in natural language processing, interpretation, and reasoning.
Who invented Google Bard?
Google Bard was developed by Google and was released on March 21, 2023. No one else is there yet, and although it has spread to more than 180 countries since Google I/O, it has not been available in any European countries other than the United Kingdom for a long time. However, Google reached an agreement with European regulators, allowing it to be released on July 13, 2023.
Bard is a joint project between Google AI and DeepMind, and the project is overseen by Jack Krawczyk. The Responsible AI team is also heavily involved in this process, and their role is to ensure that AI is developed thoughtfully and safely.
What can you do with Google Bard?
Google Bard can do everything ChatGPT can, with some extras on top. Sometimes it’s hard to get right, but the idea that you can feed information from a live page and get information about its content is what ChatGPT is all about. I can’t do it right now. This gives Google an advantage. After all, you can organize, research, summarize, and write with the help of Google Bard, although it may not be very accurate.
For example, Google says that “if you ask an LLM to solve a math problem, it will predict the answer based on what it has learned from, not based on advanced logic or calculations. It has or produces incorrect information.”
Some of Bard’s best features are the ability to respond with images, view other created posts, send posts in multiple formats, and type descriptions. Most of these ChatGPTs cannot do without plugins.
How to use Google Bard
You can use Google Bard to access the Google homepage. You’ll need a Google account, but that’s the only barrier to signing in. If you live in an unsupported country, you can also use a VPN to access the service, which I use even though I live in Ireland.
The future of Google Bard
Google has argued that Google Bard can compete with AI services from Microsoft and OpenAI, but that remains to be seen. The company has shown itself to be very concerned about the role of AI, but it’s hard to say that the company doesn’t see this as an excuse to stay behind in some competition. However, there is some interesting technology behind Bard, and since it uses a different language than Bing Chat and ChatGPT, the competition is not bad.
