Microsoft Excel received a lot of features this month across Windows and the web, the main one being Python support.

Last week, Microsoft Excel customers were surprised when the Redmond technology company announced support for the Python programming language in the program. This is designed to make it easier for researchers and scientists to manipulate and visualize data using Python libraries and use Excel formulas and PivotTables directly in the same application, but for Insiders at the moment. Now, the company has released all the documents that it has added to its popular website program in the month of August 2023.
Starting with Excel for Windows, we have a new “Insert Table” option available in the Power BI Datasets section to help you quickly add linked tables for analysis. In addition, the “Save As” box is being expanded to provide information about when you saved the file and who made the most recent changes. For example, if someone changes a file while you’re in it, Excel will let you know who that person was, so you can decide whether you want to discard the changes or save them in a copy.
Additionally, the share menu has been updated to be less cluttered. This also applies to Microsoft 365 apps on all platforms (including Excel for Windows), enabling users to quickly send an email or copy a link, manage access, and share files with external users. Additionally, Excel clients can also take advantage of a dedicated button on the Home tab in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to find and install Office add-ins.
That’s not all, there’s a lot of new content being offered to Office Insiders in the Beta Channel as well. The author apparently supports Python in Excel, which we have discussed in detail here. After all, we have an array of artifacts where the cell value ends up in a manual calculation. Prior to this update this month, Excel tracked these updates automatically and internally, but did not show any issues to the user. Now, old values will have a hit to indicate that they need to be read again. Finally, Microsoft is introducing a monospaced font in the Excel formula bar for better readability because each character will have its own width, which allows your eyes to adjust and anticipate the placement of characters. It is not clear whether this change will extend to other parts of Excel.
There are a few changes to Excel for the web client, but nothing too disruptive. Basically, the updated dialog box for the Share section and the dedicated button for installing Office add-ins have also made their way to the web version of Excel. The interesting thing is that there is no separate section for Excel for Mac and Excel for Android this time – unlike last month – which shows that platforms were not what Microsoft focused on this month.
