Don’t need your Microsoft 365 subscription? Here’s how to prevent it from happening again.
Microsoft 365 is a subscription service that gives you access to Microsoft applications such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. While these programs allow you to get the most out of the best laptops on the market, online programs are available for most of these, and you may want to cancel your membership if you don’t want the most advanced computer software. Here’s how to do it.
How to stop recurring payments for Microsoft 365
If you no longer want to be charged for Microsoft 365 but want to continue enjoying it until the end of your subscription, you can turn off recurring payments. Here’s how:
- Go to your Microsoft account page.
You must use the account you used to purchase the subscription.
- Under Subscriptions, find Microsoft 365 and click Change.
- Click Turn off recurring payments.
- To confirm your selection, go to the bottom and click I don’t want my subscription.
After this, you will still have access to your Microsoft 365 apps and OneDrive storage until the end of your subscription period. When it expires, your apps will no longer work and your OneDrive storage will be limited.
How to cancel your Microsoft 365 subscription
- Go to your account page on the Microsoft website.
You must use the account you used to purchase the subscription.
- Under Subscriptions, look for Microsoft 365 and click Change.
- Click Unsubscribe.
- To confirm the cancellation, go to the bottom and click I don’t want my subscription.
Your Microsoft 365 subscription will be canceled and you will lose access to the Microsoft 365 apps installed on your PC. If your files in OneDrive exceed the free account limit (usually 5GB), you will also lose the ability to add or edit files in your OneDrive.
What happens when you cancel your Microsoft 365 subscription
Microsoft 365 gives you access to a number of features. In particular, it allows you to install all Windows 11 programs of the Microsoft 365 (also called Office) suite, such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and Publisher. This system also includes important features for other apps, such as call blocking in Teams, features in OneNote, and features available online and on your phone.
In addition, Microsoft 365 also gives you access to 1TB of storage in OneDrive, compared to the 5GB limit of the free plan. For Microsoft 365 Basic, you get 100GB of storage instead.
The Microsoft 365 family also extends these benefits to up to five people, meaning that each person gets 1TB of cloud storage and access to Microsoft 365 desktop applications. All of these benefits will be lost when your subscription is suspended or expired.
Will I lose my OneDrive files?
Since Microsoft 365 has a larger OneDrive storage limit compared to the free plan, you may lose the ability to add files or edit your recent files if you skip the OneDrive section of free accounts.
However, you can temporarily download your OneDrive files after canceling your Microsoft 365 subscription. This allows you to create a backup before your files are removed from Microsoft’s servers. You have approximately 12 months to do this after signing up, during which Microsoft can delete your files at any time.
