MacOS makes it easy to distinguish files and folders through icons. The icon of a file represents the type of file. For example, a text file is a piece of paper, while a zip file displays a zipper. The illustration of a folder is simpler: it’s a folder.

It’s not always obvious how to change the icons of files and folders on your Mac. Maybe you want an image for a file icon or a different color for a folder icon. With just a few clicks, you can create almost any illustration you want.

Use different icon images

You can use pictures as icons for files or folders on your Mac. This is very convenient for finding what you need quickly.

Step 1: Duplicate the image you want to use for your icon in one of the following ways:

  • Open it in preview and select edit > clone from the menu bar.
  • Select the image and choose edit > clone From the Finder menu column.
  • Right click on the image and select clone.
  • Select an image and use keyboard shortcuts Order + C.

You will then copy the image to the clipboard.

Step 2: Whether it is a file or a folder, you need to open its properties to access its icon.Select a file or folder and select document > Get information From the menu bar or right-click and select Get information.

This will open a window with details about the project. You’ll see this icon in the upper left corner of the window.

Step 3: Select the icon in the Get Information window to highlight it.Then paste the image by selecting edit > Paste From the menu bar or using keyboard shortcuts Order + V.

You should see the copied image replace the default icon for the file or folder. You can then close the “Get Information” window.

Change folder icon color

If you just want to change the color of the folder icon on your Mac, you can do this using Preview. As mentioned above, open the Get Info window for the folder.

Step 1: Select the icon in the upper left corner of the details window to highlight it.Now, copy the icon by selecting edit > clone From the menu bar or using keyboard shortcuts Order + C.

Step 2: Open Preview app on your Mac and select document > New from clipboard in the menu bar. You should see the folder icon displayed for you to edit.

Step 3: At the top of the preview app, select mark button in the toolbar.Then, select Adjust color button and use Coloring Slide the bar to select the color you want for the icon.

If you wish, you can choose to use other color adjustment tools.

Step 4: Once you have set the icon to the color you want, you can simply copy and paste it back into the folder details window.

Pick edit > select all and then edit > clone Copy the icon from the menu column.You can also use the selection tool in the preview to outline the illustration and then select edit > clone.

Step 5: Return to the “Get Information” window opened for the folder. Select the upper left icon again to highlight it.Then, paste the new icon by selecting edit > Paste in the menu bar or using keyboard shortcuts Order + V.
