You don’t need a Mac or PC to edit your favorite photos. Chromebooks are also photo editing machines.
Editing photos is something people often associate with the best laptops, but if you have a large Chromebook, you can still edit photos. Thanks to support for Linux and Android apps, you can download and install popular photo editors like GIMP or use the Gallery app and Google Photos app to edit a photo. You can also use the Internet and edit photos online. Here are five ways we recommend.
How to edit photos with the Gallery app on a Chromebook
The easiest way to edit a photo on a Chromebook is with the Google Gallery app. It opens automatically when you open an image saved on your Chromebook. There is no need to download additional software to use. The software is very basic and offers basic seeding, rotation, regression, analysis filters, and annotation tools.
- Go to the File app in ChromeOS and double-click the image you want to edit to open it.
- At the top of the open window, look at the center of the screen.
- To download and edit the image, click the arrow icon (sixth image from the left). Select the option in the sidebar that opens.
- To expand the image, click on the square icon (seventh from the left). Type the numbers you want to change the image in the sidebar that opens on the right.
- Click the slider icon (eighth from the left) to change the aspect ratio, contrast, or saturation. You can adjust the sliders as you see fit and view the image.
- Finally, to annotate the image, click on the scribble icon (ninth from the left). You can choose between different brushes and colors.
- Save any changes by clicking the Save button.
- Save a copy by clicking the down arrow and selecting Save As.
How to edit photos with the Google Photos app on Chromebook
We recommend that you use the Google Photos app for advanced photo manipulation. It is available as a direct link from the Gallery App and offers many filters, the ability to adjust the white space, adjust the density, and other options. You can also just touch the picture.
- Double-click an image in the Files app to open it in the Gallery app.
- When the Gallery app opens, click on the Lighting effects icon (eighth from the right).
- Click Other Tools in Photos. If you don’t see this, go to the Google Play Store and download Google Photos.
- You will immediately see the ability to enlarge the image or make it warmer or cooler.
- Click the icon second from the left to your right to change the view.
- Drag the controller down the screen to rotate.
- Click the third icon from left to right to adjust various aspects of the image, such as highlights, black point, saturation, and brightness.
- Click the fourth icon from left to right to change the filters.
- Click the blue Save button when you’re done. The updated image is now saved to your Chromebook and will replace the original one. Click Reset to confirm.
How to edit images with GIMP on a Chromebook
Photoshop is a popular photo editing software for Windows PC and Mac. This is not available on ChromeOS, but a solid alternative is GIMP, which is a photo editing program. This is a Linux app, and getting started with it requires you to run Linux on your Chromebook.
- Start Linux on your Chromebook.
- Search for Terminal in the ChromeOS launcher.
- Start the last program, and select Penguin.
- Type the command: sudo apt install gimp
- Open GIMP.
- Open the image with File and then Open.
- Play with menus and edit your photos.
I recommend using the Image menu in GIMP for most image editing purposes. From here, you can manage colors, download an image, and more. If you move to the Colors menu, you can change color, temperature, levels, curves, and more. GIMP is a modern program, so the sky is the limit.
How to edit photos online with photo editing
Your fourth way to edit photos on a Chromebook is through your web browser. You can upload your photos to a website designed for photo editing. My favorite is Photopea. You can open your image or start a new project just like you would with Photoshop.
- Open Chrome and go to the Photopea website.
- If you want to create a new project select New Project.
- You can also open a new project on a computer by selecting Open from computer to open an existing file, including PSD, AI, or AD.
- When you’re done, you can go to File and Export As to export your image.
You can use the menu at the top of the app to apply filters and images, just like you would in Photoshop. You will have tools on the side, such as Photoshop. The photo filters will be under the photo menu.
How to transfer photos and Android apps on Chromebook
Finally, if you’re looking for another photo editor beyond the Google Photos app and Gallery, there are plenty of other Android app options on the Google Play Store. Our favorite is Adobe Lightroom, although some of the apps are limited to Chromebooks or require a paid subscription to use. You can also try a free app like Pixlr, which has simple and easy-to-understand controls and built-in tutorials, but it has a daily limit. Even Google’s Snapseeed app offers photo editing capabilities and is optimized for screen devices like the larger ChromeOS tablet. We have included the download links for these apps below.
Here are four ways you can edit photos on your Chromebook. If you’re looking for a more straightforward way, check out the Google Photos and Gallery apps, although there are Android apps you can use that are also easy to use. If you want the most advanced image editing skills, check out GIMP. ChromeOS is a great platform and it doesn’t just focus on the web.
