How to get new emojis on your iPhone or Android device

Texting and messaging apps are great, but plain old text sometimes doesn’t get emotions right, and that’s where emojis come in. While choosing a particular emoji is a generational minefield, young people can cringe considering the choices of older people. At its most extreme, there’s no doubt that adding a little emoji to the end of a message can help clarify what you mean. Since their introduction in the late 1990s, these ideograms, smileys and emoji have helped us express ourselves for decades.

Software updates aren’t the only way to get new emoji. Google’s Gboard keyboard does some interesting things with emoji. It doesn’t add new emoji; instead, it remixes existing ones. Ever wanted a ghost emoji with dollar sign eyes? Or an alien spaceship with hearts on it? Probably not, but admit it, you’re thinking about how to use it now, aren’t you?

It all happens within Gboard, and only works on Android phones. If you have a Google Pixel smartphone, you probably already have it, but you may need to turn it on. We’ll show you how to turn this feature on and how it works. Before starting this process, make sure to download and enable Gboard.

Step 1: Open the messaging app of your choice and tap on the text field to open the keyboard.

Step 2: Select Options button in the upper left corner and select set up.

Open Gboard's options menu.

Select Settings in Gboard.

Step 3: Select Emojis, Stickers & GIFs.

Install third-party keyboards and apps

Emojis are now available on iPhone and Android, so there’s no need to download a new keyboard just to get them. However, there are apps you can download that will give you more emojis to use, as well as a few other bonuses.

If you want to create personalized emojis, Bitmoji (also available on Android) is perfect. Just download it and you can create your own version of Bitmoji that will pose in many different ways, adding your own personal touch to the classic emoji.

Another option is Facemoji (also available on Android), which has over 5,000 emojis, a built-in meme creator, and a fully customizable keyboard.

There are other options, but be aware that downloading a completely unfamiliar keyboard can be a dangerous thing to do. While emojis rarely hurt anyone, keystroke trackers can, and your keyboard knows everything you type. So, be careful while downloading new emoji keyboard. When in doubt, do not download.
