While modern smartphones are very secure as long as they remain locked using biometrics like a password or fingerprint, these features only protect the front door by default. If someone picks up your phone while it’s unlocked, there’s usually nothing stopping them from exploring everything from your contacts to emails to photos.

This can be especially challenging with photos, as these are some of the things we love to show off our phones. We’ve probably all had that moment when we want to show a friend or co-worker a funny cat meme, so we hand over our phone and trust they won’t swipe right and see the photo of a furry mole we sent that day To our doctor in the morning.

While avoiding letting other people touch your phone is one solution, the good news is there’s a better way to keep your truly personal photos private. Thankfully, both Google and Samsung know this, so they offer a way to bury photos deeper into their respective Photos apps to ensure you’re the only one who can see them.

How to hide photos on Android phone

Google Photos now comes pre-installed on most modern Android phones, and for those that don’t, it can be quickly and easily downloaded from the Play Store. It’s one of the best photo apps for Android phones, especially since you can take advantage of Google Cloud Storage, which you’ve probably already paid for, for your Gmail messages and Google Drive files.

Two years ago, Google added a Locked Folder feature to Google Photos to keep your most personal photos hidden and stored only locally on your device. Recently, it was expanded to securely sync this locked folder to Google Photos on the web and even to Google Photos on Apple devices. As of this writing, this feature is still being rolled out, so it may not be available to your account yet. If this is the case, please note that before it appears, the photos in the locked folder will be moved out of Google Photos in the cloud and stored only on your device; they will be deleted if you uninstall Google Photos ;They will not move automatically if you switch to a new device.

Note that Google only started rolling out this feature on August 29, 2023, so it may not be available to everyone yet.

Step 11: To access photos in the locked folder in the future, simply open the Google Photos app, select library > Utilities > Lock folder and authenticate using your fingerprint or password.

Although Samsung previously allowed users to back up Secure Folder contents to Samsung Cloud, this feature was discontinued in early 2021.
