How to install a VPN on Windows

Protect yourself from prying eyes with a VPN.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) providers often provide software to download, install, and run to establish and manage a secure connection. Although it is a software available from the best VPNs, there may be times when you need to configure the connection manually within Windows. This is what our guide can help you with, and it should work for most (if not all) VPNs out there.

XDA’S VIDEO OF THE NEXT DAY CONTINUES

We usually recommend using the software provided by your VPN provider, but if you want to configure it manually, this guide will walk you through the different ways to do it. Also, remember to shop around, as there are many good VPNs out there. We always recommend going with a VPN that supports your devices, is fast enough, and provides enough data to keep you online before going over the limit. Not all VPNs are created equal, and some may have usage, speed, and data limits.

How to set up a VPN on Windows

To configure your VPN manually, we recommend having VPN information before you start following these steps. The VPN provider may have this information on their website or in one of the various emails you may have received when purchasing a subscription.

  1. Log into your Windows installation.
  2. Open the Settings app.
  3. Select Network & Internet from the side menu.
  4. Choose a VPN from the main view.
  5. Click Add VPN under VPN connection.
  6. Select Windows (built-in) under “VPN provider.”
  7. Enter the name of the VPN under “connection name.” We recommend VPN providers to make things easier.
  8. Enter the server information under “Server name or address.”
  9. Select Automatic under “VPN type.”
  10. The settings for “Login information type” will vary between VPN providers. Once you’ve chosen a username and password, enter them in the fields below.
  11. Click Save.

How to enable (or disable) VPN on Windows

The way to connect to the VPN will vary depending on how it is set up. If you’re using a VPN-provided app, this usually starts automatically with Windows and may require manual input depending on how the app was selected. It is possible for the connection to be established automatically without pressing a button. If you added a VPN manually using our guide above, please follow the steps below.

Connect to the VPN using the bar

  1. Click the network taskbar icon on the Windows desktop.
  2. Click VPN.
  3. Click Connect on the VPN you want.

How to remove VPN on Windows

If you want to remove VPN from Windows, it’s a straightforward process that follows the same steps as manual installation.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Select Network & Internet from the side menu.
  3. Choose a VPN from the main view.

The VPN connection is now removed from Windows. If you are using an app from a VPN provider, all you need to do is uninstall the app.

Why you should use a VPN

Browsers have become very good at protecting you when you connect to websites around the world. Most have built-in protections against malware and fraud, but using a VPN can help provide additional protection while keeping your access private. Using a VPN encrypts your content and can often make it harder to be tracked. Although it is a VPN that is used with a very secure browser, we are careful when browsing.

Torrenting is often one of the main reasons why a VPN can be used to protect against legal problems. Although we do not recommend you to download the latest season of Love Is Blind, it is possible to use a VPN to prevent your ISP from monitoring your service. There are other ways to monitor this kind of usage, including bandwidth monitoring, but it’s also important to check that your VPN provider allows throttling on a case-by-case basis.

Some of the benefits of using a VPN include bypassing location restrictions (video, websites, etc.) and hacking your location. Even if you plan to use your devices, we highly recommend using a VPN to keep you (and others around you) safe online.
