How to prevent pop-ups in Chrome, Edge, and other desktop browsers

Pop-ups can be annoying, but modern browsers have built-in controls that make them easy to avoid

The more you surf the web on any of the best browsers (regardless of the operating system or device), the more likely you are to encounter visual effects. This can mess up any website you’re on, and we understand how frustrating it can be.

The good news is that pop-ups aren’t as bad as they were when the Internet first started, and that’s because modern browsers have pop-up controls. However, if you see a malicious pop-up, you may want to check your browser’s settings. You may also want to allow pop-ups on a specific page, and you can choose to allow them on a per-page basis. Avoid popups in Google Chrome

Let’s start with the most popular browser in the world: Google Chrome. The settings used by Chrome will be very similar to Vivaldi’s and Microsoft Edge’s.

1. Click the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of your screen.
2. Select Preferences.
3. Select Privacy and Security.
4. Select Site Settings.
5. Scroll down and select Pop-ups and redirects.
6. Make sure the button around Don’t allow sites to send pop-ups or use navigation and search.

Allow pop-ups in Google Chrome

1. To allow a pop-up if a website encourages one, click Block Messages in your address bar. Then, click on the link listed to open it.
2. To allow all pop-ups, follow steps 1-5 above. Then select Sites can send pop-ups and use redirects.
3. To allow pop-ups on a page-by-page basis, select Add under Allowed to send pop-ups and use other controls.

Avoid pop-ups in Vivaldi

Vivaldi is a very popular web browser, and is known for its email client. The browser is based on the Chromium engine, so the updates will be similar to Google Chrome.

1. In the URL bar at the top of your browser, type vivaldi://settings.
2. Select Privacy and Security.
3. Select Site Settings.
4. Scroll down and select Pop-ups and redirects.
5. Make sure the button around Don’t allow sites to send pop-ups or use navigation and search.

Allow pop-ups in Vilvaldi

1. To allow a pop-up if a page prompts you, click the Blocked Pages icon at the end of the link. Next, click on the link to the page listed.
2. To allow all pop-ups, follow steps 1-4 above, then select Sites can send pop-ups and use a different redirect.
3. To allow pop-ups on a page-by-page basis, select Add under Allowed to send pop-ups and use other controls.

Avoid pop-ups in Microsoft Edge

The third is Microsoft Edge, the browser that comes bundled with Windows 11. Again, the issue is very similar to Chrome and Vivaldi here as this is another Chromium browser.

1. Click the three heads on the top right of your screen next to your profile picture.
2. Select Preferences.
3. In the sidebar, select Cookies and site permissions.
4. Select Site Settings.
5. Check Pop-ups and change it again under All permissions. Click it.
6. Make sure the Blocked switch is turned on.

Allow pop-ups in Microsoft Edge

1. To allow pop-up, click Pop-up prohibited message in your address bar. Then, click on the link listed to open it.
2. To allow notifications, follow steps 1-5 above, and change the switch next to blocked to Off so that it is grayed out.
3. If you want to allow pop-ups on a specific page, select Allow, then click Add.

Avoid Opera exits

Of course, we can’t forget Opera. This is another browser based on Chromium. However, it offers its own unique features and features such as ad blocking, free VPN, and integrated messenger apps.

1. Click on the settings gear icon in the address bar.
2. Scroll down and select Go to all settings without opening.
3. Select Privacy and security.
4. Select Site Preferences.
5. Scroll to Pop-up and navigate and cut the path.

Mozilla Firefox was built with privacy in mind, and like the other browsers on this list, pop-up blockers are automatic. Here’s how to access preferences if you need them.

1. Click the hamburger menu on the right side of your screen.
2. Select Preferences.
3. Click Privacy & Security.
4. Go to Permissions and make sure the block pop-up windows box is checked.

Allow pop-ups in Mozilla Firefox

1. To allow a pop-up, select Options under Firedox has blocked this page from opening a pop-up window. Then select Show.
2. To allow all pop-ups, follow steps 1-4 above.
3. Next, select Exceptions and enter the name of the website you want to see pop-ups.

Avoid pop-ups in Safari on macOS

Finally, we have Safari on macOS. This is the integrated browser that comes with all major Macs. This browser blocks all pop-ups by default, so if you want to see pop-ups or allow a website to show you, you need to configure it.

1. Select Safari from the menu bar.
2. Select Preferences.
3. Scroll to Pop-up Windows.
4. Choose a way to do it when you visit other websites.
5. If you want Safari to block and notify about pop-ups, select that option. You can also choose Block or Allow

Allow pop-ups in Safari on macOS

1. Follow the process above.
2. Go to the website you want to view pop-ups on.
3. Click Allow.
