How to read EPUB books on your Kindle (3 ways to do it)

An eBook reader is a very useful piece of kit for any book lover. A lightweight device like the Amazon Kindle means you can easily carry your entire collection, keeping your prized paperbacks from damage and saving space and weight in your pocket or bag. Amazon’s Kindle is by far the most popular e-reader, but the Kindle doesn’t support the most popular e-book type: EPUB used to be a fact.

Thankfully, this is no longer the case, and the Kindle can now read EPUB files without conversion to any other type of file. This means more freedom when it comes to acquiring new books, since it’s much easier to get free ebooks from sites like Project Gutenberg. While converting has always been a relatively simple process, it does take some time, and not having to do it now means more time reading and less time playing with conversion software.

Of course, there are some caveats. Primarily, these EPUB files need to be free from Digital Rights Management (DRM), so protected files purchased from other stores cannot be read on the Kindle. However, there are plenty of DRM-free EPUB books available.

While the conversion process is old news to most, some older Kindles may not support EPUB files, so we’ve kept these instructions in case you need them.

How to Read EPUB Books Using Send to Kindle

Amazon’s Send to Kindle service is by far the easiest way to send EPUB files to the Kindle e-reader. Since an update that added EPUB support, this service no longer supports MOBI or AZW files, so you’ll need to send them via a USB cable. The size limit for sending to Kindle Services is only 50MB, so if your EPUB is larger than that, you’ll still need to convert it before transferring it over the USB cable.

Step 1: First, you need to get your Kindle’s email address. Every Kindle has a dedicated email address.go to Content and Equipment page on your Amazon account.

Step 3: Once you see the data, you will see an email address attached to your Kindle. You can also change it to something more memorable if you wish.

Step 4: Open your email client of choice, start a new email, paste your Kindle email address, and include the EPUB file as an attachment.

Step 5: If your Kindle successfully connects to Wi-Fi or mobile Internet, you should receive your files in a few minutes or so. If the process is successful, a receipt will also be sent to your email address.

Can I send EPUB files to Kindle using a USB cable?

Unfortunately, you cannot send EPUB files via USB cable. It appears that this method still suffers from the same limitations, so you will need to convert the EPUB file to another format before sending it.

How to Convert EPUB Files to MOBI Using Calibre

Caliber is one of the most popular ways to convert eBooks. Caliber is an ebook organization program that also allows users to convert their books into different formats, but it also works well as a catalog for keeping books together if you collect them from several different sources.

This method is only really needed on older Kindles that have not received an update to allow reading EPUB files, or for large files that cannot be sent using Send to Kindle.

Step 1: Download Caliber. You can download Caliber online for free. It’s available on Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile devices.

Step 2: Add the EPUB book to the library.

To do this, download the EPUB file to your computer.Click the button labeled add book in caliber.

Step 5: Set the output format to MOBI.

The previous step will open a new window, giving you many options to tweak the metadata and format the new file you will create. For our purposes, the only thing that matters is the output format, which you choose from the drop-down menu in the top right corner. Make sure this field is set to MOBI.

You can also take advantage of another reliable program for converting EPUB files to MOBI called Kindle Previewer. This useful app lets you preview eBooks on various Kindle models. As with the Caliber method above, this is only really useful for large files that the Kindle can’t handle with EPUB files or send via Send to Kindle.

Step 1: Download Kindle Previewer 3. The program comes from Amazon itself and is currently available as a free download for Windows and macOS.
