Radeon ReLive is the solution AMD GPU users have for recording and playing games
While Microsoft, Sony, and Nvidia all entered mainstream graphics in 2013, AMD graphics cards were lacking in that department. While Nvidia users could easily use ShadowPlay to record games, AMD users didn’t have the same. However, AMD has been working with Radeon ReLive, in opposition to Nvidia when it comes to gaming graphics. Here’s everything you need to know about Radeon ReLive and why it’s the main reason why AMD GPUs are still among the best graphics cards.
How to install Radeon ReLive
Unlike ShadowPlay, Radeon ReLive is not something you have to install separately but instead comes with drivers that you get from AMD’s website. After installing your drivers, you simply need to download Radeon Software (sometimes called AMD Software) and navigate to the Record & Stream tab to access Radeon ReLive.
However, there are some hardware requirements for Radeon ReLive. First, you need a different GPU, because Radeon ReLive is not supported on APUs with integrated graphics. Even among specialized GPUs, some may not support ReLive; The RX 6400, for whatever reason, does not have ReLive support. And if you have a laptop with AMD graphics and integrated graphics, you may need to disable the graphics to get the Record & Stream tab to appear.
How to use Radeon ReLive
Inside the Record & Stream tab are five secondary tabs that each have specific features and settings: Record, Live Stream, Scene Editor, Media, and Updates. These tabs are where you can use these applets and customize them as you wish.
Graphics in Radeon ReLive
If you’ve used OBS before, recording and playing in Radeon ReLive is probably familiar. If you are new to Radeon ReLive, it won’t be difficult to learn. To access the Record tab and start recording, do the following:
- Open the Radeon Software.
- Click the Record & Stream tab.
- Click the Record button.
Here, you can see the Record tab is divided into two parts: Controls and Preview. The Preview area shows you what you’ve already written, but the Controls menu is what you want to use. You’ll see your default microphone and camera settings, adjust the microphone volume, and switch to show the recording time in the upper right (indicated by the Show Indicator).
The great thing about ReLive is that you can easily choose what windows or monitors to draw, and you can choose a specific area of the project if you want. Just select Fullscreen if you want to capture the entire screen or monitor or Region if you want to capture a portion of the screen or monitor. This is something you can’t do in ShadowPlay, and it puts Radeon ReLive on a par with OBS, which continues to be a very powerful program.
Browsing in Radeon ReLive
As with recording, it’s easy to find a Live Stream site to stream.
- Open the Radeon Software.
- Click the Record & Stream tab.
- Click on the Live Stream tab.
- Select an account to log in.
- Click the Go Live button.
The Live Stream tab is very similar to Record, but has additional features for live streaming. There’s a drop-down menu to choose the page you want to track, a chat window, and a custom screen changer using graphics you can create in Radeon ReLive itself. It also has a wide selection of platforms, including Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook, along with Weibo, Redstream, Stage Ten, and Gfycat.
The Scene Editor in Radeon ReLive is surprisingly robust. You can create up to eight images, and you can put tons of things in it: a webcam, a chat window, photos, gifs, videos, and, most importantly, browser resources. The latter is the first way to create high-quality videos, and services like StreamElements should be compatible. This makes ReLive a reliable alternative to OBS for the general audience.
Other options are features in Radeon ReLive
The Media and Settings tabs are fairly straightforward, with the former containing all of your previous photos and the latter containing all of the Record, Live Stream, and Scene Editor settings, though most of the settings are in those tabs as well. The most important settings you’ll want to change are settings, framerate, and framerate. There is also an option to save your streams, which means allowing ReLive to record your streams and save a copy on your PC.
In addition, on the settings tab, you can enable other features that do not have their own tabs: Instant Replay, Instant GIF, and In-Game Replay. This captures the last few minutes of your game and allows you to save it instead of recording the entire game.
Using Radeon ReLive via Radeon Overlay and hotkeys
Although you can use the Radeon Software window, you can also use the Radeon Overlay to start drawing, start downloading, or take pictures.
- Open the Radeon Overlay by pressing Alt + Z on the sidebar or Alt + R to open the full screen.
- Navigate to the Radeon ReLive section of the overlay.
- You will find four buttons: Record, Live Stream, Instant Replay, and Instant GIF.

- Open the Radeon Software.
- Click the gear icon in the upper right corner.
- Go to the Hotkeys tab.

Radeon ReLive is perfect for casual users who want to dip their toes into high-end graphics
At first glance, OBS can seem intimidating and deterring newcomers to the world of recording and playing games. What Radeon ReLive actually does is take OBS, make it easier to use, and cut all the fat. Although OBS is currently the best software for recording and filtering games, there is a small Radeon ReLive that can’t do what OBS can do, at least as far as casual users are concerned.
Compared to Nvidia ShadowPlay, ReLive is better overall. You don’t need to install and log into a separate program, you don’t need to connect to it through the cover, and there are many options for recording and downloading. Of course, ReLive doesn’t have Ansel, which can apply filters to graphics and animations, but most gamers no doubt don’t care about applying filters to games. Apart from Ansel, ShadowPlay only seems to be the most important version of ReLive, which is good for AMD GPU owners and can make up for some of the mistakes that Radeon cards have compared to their Nvidia counterparts.
