Let’s start with the price. The Lenovo Slim Pro 9i starts at around $1,870 for the 14-inch model or $2,150 for the larger and more powerful 16-inch model. The Dell XPS 15 starts at a very low price of $1,299. Although the laptop is cheap, to be sure, but Dell’s offering is cheap in its configuration. However, this changes quickly once you start adding extras.
All these laptops are easily available through their official websites. Although the Dell XPS 15 is also available in major online and electronics stores such as Best Buy, the availability of the Lenovo Slim Pro 9i has been iffy, perhaps because it was released recently.
Creation
In terms of design, these laptops look and feel like high-end machines. Both sport a solid aluminum chassis with a low profile and sleek design. They are impressively thin and light, making one ideal for on-the-go users. Even the 16-inch Lenovo Slim Pro 9i doesn’t feel big or bulky. But at about five pounds because of its aluminum frame, it’s a little heavy.
Sound quality is good on both, too. The Slim Pro 9i has a clear six-speaker setup, while the XPS 15’s stereo speakers consist of two woofers and a tweeter. Both laptops sound great and are great for moving around and listening to music.
The keyboards on the Dell XPS 15 and Lenovo Slim Pro 9i are also accurate and comfortable, with the 16-inch Slim Pro 9i having a number pad. Both offer very large and responsive touchpads. Along with its aluminum chassis, the XPS 15 has a carbon fiber composite palm rest, which feels great to the touch.
For ports, the Dell XPS 15 gives you three USB-C connections (two of which are Thunderbolt 4), a 3.5mm audio jack, and an SD card reader. There is no USB Type-A port, however. On the Slim Pro 9i, you have one Thunderbolt 4 port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and an HDMI connection on both the 14-inch and 16-inch models. The 14-inch Slim Pro 9i also offers you a USB-C connector and two USB-A ports, while the 16-inch has three USB-A ports.

Both the Dell XPS 15 and the Lenovo Slim Pro 9i offer great specs, but the Dell’s display takes the top spot. The Lenovo Slim Pro 9i comes with a 14.5-inch 3072×1920 or 16-inch 3200×2000 mini-LED display that has vivid colors, deep blacks, and a refresh rate of up to 165Hz. Both displays are touch sensitive, and Lenovo claims a maximum brightness of 1,200 nits for HDR, but we measured around 600-700 nits in SDR in our tests. The Slim Pro 9i’s display is close to OLED quality; however, color accuracy could be better. Also, the touchscreen is glossy and can be annoying glare in bright conditions.
Displays have always been a highlight of Dell’s XPS line, and the 2023 XPS 15 is no exception. The standard non-touch display is 1920×1200, which isn’t anything special, but the high-resolution OLED display is nothing short of impressive. It has a 3.5K display, and as an OLED panel, it’s sharp and accurate in color, making it ideal for developers. It’s not as bright as the Slim Pro 9i, but we still got around 400 degrees of brightness in the conditions used during our time with it.
Sadly, the webcams on these laptops leave a lot to be desired, no doubt due to the very small bezels that provide little room to mount decent cameras. The XPS 15’s web browser is still limited to 720p video, and while the Slim Pro 9i can record up to 1440p, we found the image to be grainy and washed out.
Procedure
The Dell XPS 15 (2023) and Lenovo Slim Pro 9i (2023) have been updated with Intel’s latest 13th-generation CPUs and Nvidia RTX graphics, which means they are more capable of creating and creating.
The 14-inch Slim Pro 9i has a Core i7-13705H CPU and a GeForce RTX 4050, while the 16-inch packs a Core i9-13905H paired with a GeForce RTX 4070, making the larger laptop the most powerful of the two. . Both also come with 32GB of RAM to support critical applications and manage multiple applications. Storage options include 512GB or 1TB SSD.
The Dell XPS 15 is no slouch, either. It can have an Intel Core i9-13900H of the 13th generation, between 8GB and 64GB of RAM, up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 GPU. It can even run without Nvidia graphics, however, with the base version featuring Intel Arc graphics and 4GB of VRAM. The XPS gives you a number of upgrade options (which explains its low price), including storage options ranging from 512GB to an 8TB SSD.
In our tests, the laptops performed admirably, as you’d expect. The 16-inch Slim Pro 9i leads the pack here, which isn’t too annoying since it packs the best of the three:

It’s worth noting that the Dell XPS 15 we tested had an RTX 4070 GPU, so this looks like it won’t be able to match the RTX 4050-packing Slim Pro 9i. However, Lenovo did a great job, which surprised us a little. This is due to the Slim Pro 9i RTX 4050 with 100W of Total Graphics Power (TGP) compared to the 40W TGP of the XPS 15’s RTX 4070. Battery life
This is another area where the Dell XPS 15 comes out ahead, not least. Battery life is an important factor for users who travel frequently, and if you choose a laptop for heavy use, this applies to you as well. The Dell XPS 15 came in at over six hours (and up to seven hours) under normal load, which isn’t surprising given its specs.
In contrast, in our experience with the Lenovo Slim Pro 9i, we saw that it got about four hours of battery life with the 16-inch model, and managed to squeeze in about five hours with the 14-inch. This isn’t too bad for a laptop of this size, but if you’re relying on it to work all day, you’ll need a backup charger. The Dell is the clear winner if battery life is a major concern.
Which one is right for you?
Lenovo Slim Pro 9i (2023) and Dell XPS 15 (2023) are the best laptops that have impressed us during our time with them. Both are powerful machines and good choices for production and multimedia. In the end, there is a clear winner: Dell XPS 15. Despite the few design changes since 2020, it is the best 15-inch laptop on the market. For the price, we think you’re getting more of a laptop with the XPS 15 than what Lenovo offers. The Dell edges out the Lenovo with a better display, more customization options, better battery life, and a better price tag (though all of these are cheaper, to be sure).

Dell didn’t reinvent the wheel with its 2023 XPS 15, and that’s fine. It’s still the best 15-inch laptop money can buy, and its hardware upgrades under the hood allow it to retain that crown. Its beautiful display, excellent design, and generous battery life give it the edge over the competition, although its 720p camera could be better.
