Microsoft is killing off translation features in OneNote for Windows 10

Microsoft is ending translation support for the OneNote Windows 10 app later this year. It is creating a new program instead.

Essentials

  • Microsoft is ending support for the translation feature in the older OneNote app for Windows 10 by November 2023.
  • Users do not lose any data but cannot translate any text.
  • Microsoft recommends getting the latest OneNote app from the Microsoft Store, which is regularly updated through Microsoft 365.

OneNote on Windows is an odd little duck. Depending on your computer configuration and usage, you may have access to two OneNote applications. The first is OneNote for Windows 10 – which is based on the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) – and has been removed from the Microsoft Store. The second is a new collaborative version based on the popular OneNote desktop program that comes with Microsoft 365. Now, the Redmond technology company has announced that it is ending translation support for the old OneNote program.

In a Microsoft support document viewed by WinBuzzer, the company has announced the removal of the translation function in the OneNote Windows 10 app. The end of this support will take effect in November 2023, after which customers who try to translate will be greeted with error messages. It is important to note that the software is supported until October 2025, although Microsoft itself will no longer update or distribute it through its stores.

Microsoft has assured customers that they will not lose data once it is deleted, they cannot use this feature in any case. Users who want to continue using translation are encouraged to get the latest OneNote app from the Microsoft Store. This app is updated monthly through Microsoft 365 and is Microsoft’s preferred version of OneNote. Alternatively, you can also pay for any of the following subscriptions, as they come with one version of OneNote:

  • Microsoft 365 Family
  • Microsoft 365 Personal
  • Microsoft 365 Business Standard
  • Microsoft 365 Business Premium
  • Microsoft 365 Apps for business
  • Microsoft 365 Enterprise applications

With the abandonment of the version of OneNote for Windows 10, it is clear that Microsoft is gradually ceasing to support the program considering the retirement of October 2025 in order to encourage more users to migrate to the new OneNote. You can download it from the Microsoft Store or through the dedicated Microsoft website here.
