The Surface Laptop Go 2 is still fresh in our memories, but we’re already thinking about the Laptop Go 3 and what it might look like.
The latest iteration of Microsoft’s budget laptop, the Surface Laptop Go 2, is just over a year old, and while we found it to be good in our review, it’s starting to feel a little old. It offers a clear look with a clean Surface Design language and a tall 3:2 aspect ratio, but as new devices come out, the need for better features is becoming apparent. So while this is still a great laptop in its own right, we’re eagerly awaiting its successor, which will likely be called the Surface Laptop Go 3.
We’ve already started hearing rumors about the Surface Go 3, so if you’re interested in Microsoft’s next laptop, we’re here to tell you everything.
When will the Surface Laptop Go 3 be released?
Meanwhile, reports suggest that the Surface Laptop Go 3 could be launched alongside the rest of the Surface family refresh expected this year. Microsoft is holding an event on September 21 focused on Surface devices, such as the Surface Pro 10, Surface Laptop Studio 2, and possibly the Surface Laptop Go 3.
After its announcement, the Surface Laptop Go 3 could be launched in the following weeks, possibly in October, which has become a popular time for Surface devices. Availability may vary depending on which market you’re in, but the United States should be one of the first places to get it.
How much will it cost?
In the past, Microsoft has kept prices similar for both generations of the Surface Laptop Go, but recent reports suggest that the Surface Laptop Go 3 will come with a higher price tag. That’s because Microsoft is hitting the low end, which includes 8GB of RAM in the base model. In addition, it has also been reported that all models will include 256GB of storage, which will also increase the price.
For details, the Surface Go 2 laptop started at $549, but if the RAM is the same configuration, you’ll be paying $800. If this is going to be a new model, then we’re looking at something around $700.
What will the Surface Laptop Go 3 change?
Microsoft doesn’t usually go too crazy with updates to its low-end devices, and with the Surface Laptop Go 3, that seems to be the case. We’re not expecting a major design change with this model, and it’s more of a refresh than a proper change. It also includes new features, however.
New processors and more RAM
As mentioned above, the latest information suggests that the Surface Laptop Go 3 will include 8GB of RAM by default, as well as 256GB of internal storage. That’s a big upgrade from the 4GB/128GB configuration that the Surface Laptop Go 2 starts with, and it’s nice to see considering that 4GB of RAM is too little to run Windows 11 and doesn’t make for great performance.
Of course, there’s also a new processor, with Microsoft shaking things up to the 12th generation Intel Core i5. Intel’s 12th generation was a big upgrade in terms of CPU performance, so this should make the performance look better. However, the image performance will be the same if this can be true.
It has also been reported that the Surface Laptop Go 3 will have a new internal interface to be optimized.
What we want to see in the Surface Laptop Go 3
While we’re not expecting much to change with the Surface Laptop Go 3’s features, we’re still dreaming of what it could be. Here are a few things we believe will make this even better.
Backlit keyboard
One of the main criticisms that the Surface Laptop Go family has received is the lack of a backlight for its keyboard, which makes it difficult to use at night or in dark rooms. Backlighting makes it easier to see and recognize the keys, and is obviously a big improvement in usability if you’re working in the dark. Every other Surface device has a backlit keyboard, including Microsoft’s budget-friendly Surface Go Keyboard, so Microsoft knows how useful it is. It’s time to upgrade to the Surface Laptop Go.
Windows Hello by default
The Surface Laptop Go and Laptop GO 2 are still the only Surface devices launched after Windows 10 that do not have Windows Hello included in the initial configuration. In fact, only Windows-powered Surface devices don’t offer the Windows Hello feature at all. Your only option is to get a fingerprint reader, which requires upgrading to at least the medium configuration.
With the Surface Laptop Go 3, we’d like to see Windows Hello support included in the default settings. Ideally, this would be via an infrared camera for facial recognition, which is a great way to unlock your PC, but we’d be happy to just see a fingerprint reader included in each model. This may be a problem with a budget-friendly laptop, but it doesn’t stop us from wishing for it.
A sharp web browser and interface
Surface-branded tablets have always been popular for their webcams compared to similarly priced laptops, but the Surface Laptop family has been largely left behind. Although the Surface Laptop Studio had a 1080p camera, it was the only way to do this. Even the Surface Laptop 5 still uses a 720p camera, and so does the Surface Laptop Go 2.
In the past, many users did not care about cameras, so this was fine, but now, Internet cameras are important for many people because of remote and hybrid work or educational activities. Most laptops, including cheap ones, have 1080p cameras now, and it’s time for Microsoft to catch up.
The same applies to displays. With the Surface Pro line, Microsoft has always used the sharpest screens considering its size, targeting a pixel density of 267 PPI (pixels per inch). However, it is the most advanced Laptop series, it only has 201 PPI, and the Surface Laptop Go 2 has only 148 PPI. In fact, the resolution of the Surface Laptop Go 2 is still below Full HD, and we believe that Microsoft will aim to increase it a bit with the next iteration. Again, this is more wishful thinking than realistic expectations.
For now, that’s all we can say about the Surface Laptop Go 3, but it shouldn’t be too long until we have an official announcement, if recent reports are to be believed. If you don’t want to wait, check out the best PCs on the market right now.
