WhatsApp launches native macOS app with group calling for up to 32 people

The app is now available for Windows and Mac, along with Android and iOS.

Essentials

  • WhatsApp has launched a MacOS version that offers the same interface as its Windows desktop client, allowing users to chat directly from their Mac without the need to connect their phone.
  • The new macOS app enables users to make group video calls with up to eight people and make group voice calls with up to 32 people, call history, and receive incoming notifications even when the app is closed. It also features easy file sharing via drag and drop.
  • The app provides end-to-end encryption, ensuring the privacy of your messages and calls across all devices. It was originally tested in 2022 and is available on Apple Silicon devices running macOS 11 Big Sur or newer. The default version can be downloaded from the WhatsApp website.

After releasing an upgraded version of its Windows desktop client earlier this year, WhatsApp has now launched a custom macOS app that the company says will offer the same features to Mac users. Originally designed as a mobile app, WhatsApp got a Windows version last year after months of beta testing, allowing users to chat directly from their PC without connecting to their phone. Before installing the local apps, users had to use the WhatsApp network to access the service on their computers.

In a blog post announcing the launch of macOS, Meta said the new app will enable users to make group video calls with up to 8 people and make group voice calls with up to 32 people simultaneously. Users can also join a group call when it starts, view their call history and choose to receive incoming notifications even when the app is closed. It also comes with the familiar features of a macOS-style app, and is designed to support multi-tasking on large screens, including the ability to “share files by dragging and entering conversations.”

WhatsApp introduced end-to-end encryption for all mobile users a few years ago, and this feature is also available on its desktop apps. This means that both Windows and Mac users can be sure that their messages and phone calls will remain private on all devices, and will be accessible to those who want them.

WhatsApp began testing the Mac app in 2022 before releasing a public beta earlier this year for Apple Silicon devices running macOS 11 Big Sur or newer. Now that the standard version is out, it’s unclear if it will be available on more devices or if compatibility will remain limited. In any case, since the app is officially available, you can download it directly from the WhatsApp website. The company also said that it will soon be available on the Mac App Store.
